Communities across the country are starting to face serious challenges with their water supply and aging water infrastructure. Private water companies have been delivering critical water service to millions of Americans for decades, and have continued to invest in the communities they serve for just as long.

As water demand and use outpaces capacity at existing facilities, our members identify efficiencies and opportunities to provide better value to their customers. Often, the solution is to design, build, and, after construction is complete, operate an entirely new, innovative facility that will meet today's needs, anticipate future community water requirements, and implement efficient, sustainable water systems.

United Water
San Antonio, Texas

As water demands on the Edwards Aquifer in San Antonio, Texas, increased, it became clear that a new solution was needed. Tapping into the nearby Medina River was a logical choice, as was the involvement of a trusted, private water service partner like United Water.

A water treatment plant was contracted as part of an agreement between United Water and the Bexar Metropolitan Development Corporation (BMDC), an industrial development corporation formed by the water district. Under the terms, United Water was responsible for designing, building, managing and operating the new surface water facilities, and for its part, the BMDC-owned facility provided financing and constructed a five-mile pipeline and storage facility.

Now the largest system of its kind in the United States, this facility provides high-quality water to more than 110,000 San Antonio residents. Once the water is transferred from the surface of the local river, it is filtered and treated repeatedly to produce more than 10,000 gallons of drinking water per minute.

The efficiencies implemented by United Water save more than 3.5 billion gallons of water annually, and the facility has been honored with a number of recognitions, including the American City and County Crown Community Award.

CH2M HILL
Traverse City, Michigan

Northern Michigan is home to some of the cleanest natural water resources in the entire world. So when public officials in Traverse City determined that an upgrade to the regional wastewater treatment plant was necessary, protection of the ecosystem was a top priority.

The city selected CH2M HILL to upgrade the existing facility, charging the company with designing a solution that met their water needs, and constructing and operating this new facility while exceeding state environmental quality standards. The company applied membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to meet these needs and provide the best value for the community, upgrading the facility while keeping it fully functional during the upgrade process. Today, the Traverse City facility is the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant using MBR technology in North America.

The CH2M HILL solution received a Michigan Water Environment Association Health and Safety Award.

Veolia Water
Tampa Bay, Florida

Every proposed project brings with it a unique set of circumstances and challenges. When Tampa Bay Water, a regional water authority and Florida's largest wholesale supplier, was faced with maintaining a reliable supply of water in the face of variable flow conditions and raw water quality, Veolia Water delivered a solution for today and for years to come.

Veolia Water addressed all the unique issues of the site, including sensitive environmental conditions. The company's ACTIFLO® process was at the heart of the solution, allowing for the successful treatment of water with high variability of water quality.

The solutions put in place continue to benefit the region to this day, and the company has expanded its involvement to help control potential raw water contaminants. The project has also won numerous awards, including honors from the National Council for Public-Private Partnerships.
