Alaska Commission to Consider NAWC “Best Practices” And Other Regulatory Tools
The Regulatory Commission of Alaska recently issued a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) “to consider ways to improve [its] rate and quality of service regulatory practices for water and wastewater utilities,” (2011 Alas. PUC LEXIS 137). In particular, the Commission indicated that it was “interested in reducing the frequency and cost of rate cases and reducing the adverse impact of regulatory lag.” To that end, the Commission attached to its NOI an appendix that identified and discussed potential improvements, including the NAWC’s “best practices,” and California’s 2005 Water Action Plan.

Severn Trent Services Donates Electrolytic Water Disinfection Equipment to Haiti
Severn Trent Services recently donated 11 portable electrolytic water disinfection systems to humanitarian agencies working to provide safe drinking water to the residents of Haiti. The combined units, which convert saltwater and energy into liquid sodium hypochlorite — a chlorine equivalent — are capable of disinfecting up to 13 million gallons of drinking water per day. The donation is part of a grassroots campaign to enable ordinary citizens to treat their drinking water at the point of consumption.
