The Sustainable Water Infrastructure Investment Act of 2010, S. 3262 and H.R. 537, continues to receive positive attention in Congress for the bill’s low-cost and creative approach to tapping private capital for water infrastructure investment projects. These projects are vital to maintaining and protecting public health and the environment.

Waxman, Markey Introduce Reauthorization of Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund

Rep. Henry A. Waxman, chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Rep. Edward J. Markey, chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, released legislation that will reauthorize and increase funding for the drinking water state revolving fund (SRF) under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The Assistance, Quality, and Affordability Act of 2010 will amend SDWA to increase assistance to states, water systems and disadvantaged communities; encourage good financial and environmental management of water systems; strengthen EPA enforcement authority; reduce lead in drinking water; and strengthen the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program.

Bernadette Sohler, Middlesex Water VP, to be Recognized at EWNJ Salute to Policy Makers

Bernadette M. Sohler, vice president of corporate affairs of Middlesex Water Company, was honored by Executive Women of New Jersey (EWNJ) at its 2010 “Salute to the Policy Makers” awards dinner on May 13, 2010. This event recognized women of professional distinction in New Jersey who are senior executives or members of boards of directors at major New Jersey-based companies and organizations.

Make Plans Now to Attend the NARUC Regional Meetings

The New England Conference of Public Utilities Commissioners will meet May 16–18, 2010, in Brewster, Mass. Eric Thornburg, president and chief executive officer of Connecticut Water Company, will participate in the panel, “How do Commissioners, Consumer Advocates and Water Utilities Balance the Need for Quality Service and Sustainable Water Infrastructure While Considering the Effect of Rate Increases on Customers in Difficult Economic Times?” The panel will be moderated by Commissioner John W. Betkoski III, vice chairman of the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control.
