Water For People Holiday Drive
The statistics are staggering: 890 million people worldwide lack access to safe water; over 2.5 billion people do not have basic sanitation facilities; more than 4,000 children die every day from preventable waterborne diseases. And these numbers don’t account for the people who once had access to safe water, but are forced to rely again on unsafe water sources because their water distribution pipe broke or their hand pump stopped working and there was nobody to fix it.

Obama Signs Major Tax Bill
On Friday, Dec. 17, President Barack Obama signed into law a $858 billion tax plan that extends all of the Bush tax cuts for two years and provides for a number of additional measures designed to further stimulate the economy.

NARUC Water Committee Adds New Member
Elia Germani, the chairman of the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission, was recently appointed to the NARUC Water Committee.
Germani was appointed to the R.I. Public Utilities Commission by Governor Lincoln Almond in May 2000, and reappointed to a six-year term in March 2001. In 2007 he was reappointed to an additional six-year term by Governor Donald Carcieri.

EPA Releases New WARN Bulletin
The EPA has released the first issue of its new biannual WARN Highlights bulletin aimed at improving communication and information sharing between members of the WARN community. Each issue of WARN Highlights will feature articles that highlight new WARN-related EPA publications and tools; lessons learned from WARN trainings/exercises, meetings and activations; and information about upcoming WARN-related events.
