NAWC Announces 2009–2010 Board of Directors
The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) announced today that Charles Firlotte, president and chief executive officer of Aquarion Company, has been named president of the NAWC board of directors. Sandra C. Sullivan, vice president of Government & Industry Relations for Veolia Water North America, and Maureen P. Westbrook, vice president of Customer and Regulatory Affairs of Connecticut Water Company, were also named to the 2009–2010 NAWC board of directors.

U.S. Using Less Water According to USGS
The United States is using less water than during the peak years of 1975 and 1980, according to water use estimates for 2005. Despite a 30 percent population increase during the past 25 years, overall water use has remained fairly stable according to a new U.S. Geological Survey report. The declines are largely attributed to the increased use of more efficient irrigation systems and alternative technologies at power plants.

American’s John Young Elected 2010 Chairman of Design-Build Institute of America
American Water Works Company, Inc., announced that John Young, president of American Water Services and American Water Works Service Company, has been elected to serve as chairman of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for 2010. Young has been a DBIA board member for five years, most recently as treasurer. This year, he also chaired the organization's strategic planning task force. The gavel will be passed to Young at the Institute's annual Design-Build Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 7, 2009.

WGCC and WSCC Release Strategic Roadmap
Water and wastewater infrastructure protection is a shared responsibility. The Water Government Coordinating Council (WGCC) is chaired by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and made up of representatives from federal, regional, state, local and tribal government programs. The Water Sector Coordinating Council (WSCC) members include municipal and investor-owned water and wastewater utilities, associations, and regional organizations. Together, these coordinating councils form the public-private partnership through which security partners collaborate to plan and implement programs aimed at achieving a common vision.

The NARUC 121st Annual Convention was held this week at the Chicago Marriott in Chicago, Ill.
The Committee on Water met Monday, Nov. 16. NAWC members were well represented at the Committee meeting.
