Peter Silva Nominated as EPA Assistant Administrator for Water
President Obama announced that he would nominate former California water official Peter Silva as the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) next assistant administrator in the Office of Water. Silva will oversee both drinking water and wastewater issues for the agency and will be charged with implementing both the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act.

NARUC Regional Conferences Prepare for Meetings

American Water Managed System Earns Source Water
System of the Year Award
American Water Works Company, Inc., announced today that the Meadville Area Water Authority (MAWA), managed by American Water, has received the 2009 Source Water System of the Year Award from the Pennsylvania Rural Water Association (PRWA). This award recognizes a water system that has developed and implemented a highly effective program to protect its source of drinking water. MAWA earned the award as a direct result of its successful Wellhead Protection Plan.

Update On Carlsbad Desalination Plant
On April 8, 2009, the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board announced it was prepared to move forward with the final permitting of Poseidon Resources’ Carlsbad, California, desalination plant after concluding that Poseidon’s proposal to restore approximately 55 acres of coastal wetlands was sufficient.
