New York Chapter
About Our Chapter
Over the past three years, the New York Chapter of the NAWC embarked on educational training that enabled people to obtain continuing education units (CEUs) for operators licensing. We have conducted training on subjects that include safety, security, equipment and technology, and rate making. Additionally, we have had guest speakers covering a variety of subjects, including cost of capital, security, emergency response and engineering design and technology. We have also held separate meetings with NYSPSC staff covering cost of capital and other financial issues facing the industry.
Our most significant accomplishment has been a "Value of Water" campaign involving print media as well as radio advertising. This program was initially implemented upon the request of a PSC Commissioner imploring us to educate our customers about this subject. A second initiative which we have recently undertaken is a scholarship program for students pursuing a field that is water related. We also recently created an associate member group, consisting of contractors, suppliers, legal, public relations and engineering firms. They are being engaged in our group with specific initiatives such as website design and bulk purchasing initiatives for smaller companies.
Finally, we engaged officials and officers of the American Water Works Association at the state and national levels to attend our meetings as Chairman Bill Varley will be meeting with the AWWA NYS board to exchange ideas and implement joint initiatives.
