NAWC Applauds Middlesex Water,
Named Outstanding ‘Green’ Business of the Year
Edison, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce recognizes company for its continued efforts in renewable energy and role as environmental steward
WASHINGTON, DC – Middlesex Water, a member of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC), was recently recognized for environmental stewardship and renewable energy practices by the Edison, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce. NAWC applauds these efforts along with those of 140 other member companies for setting conservation standards for the industry by initiating and implementing sustainable initiatives focused on renewable energy, green buildings, infrastructure and other areas.
In 2007, Middlesex Water produced 47.4 million gallons of safe drinking water per day for its customers in Middlesex County. The company proactively invested $3.9 million in water main improvements throughout its central New Jersey system and recently completed a $2.0 million filter rehabilitation program at its largest treatment plant in Edison, to ensure the continued delivery of a safe and reliable drinking water supply.
Exemplifying its commitment to clean, renewable energy, Middlesex Water installed a solar energy plant which generates about 10% of the electric needs of the company’s surface water treatment plant. To date, this commitment to “green” energy has resulted in savings passed on to customers as well as environmental benefits including:
- Reduction of 1,723 lbs of nitrogen oxides (smog)
- Avoidance of 2,679 lbs of sulfur oxides (acid rain)
- Reduction of carbon dioxide by 461 tons
“Our members are dedicated to utilizing and delivering water in environmentally sustainable ways,” remarked Peter Cook, Executive Director of NAWC. “By reducing its energy footprint, Middlesex Water has shown that private water companies are an important part of the green solution —delivering water in a more environmentally-friendly way and cutting costs for its customers.“
